Canonical made the beta version of its upcoming Ubuntu 23.04 (Lunar Lobster) operating system available for public testing on March 30 before the official release on April 20.

Apart from Ubuntu Desktop, server, and Cloud, the Ubuntu 23.04 beta flavors include Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Cinnamon, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu Unity, and Xubuntu.

Ubuntu 23.04: What to Expect?

Among all Ubuntu releases, Ubuntu 23.04 stands out as it offers some of the most cutting-edge GNU/Linux technologies and software. The Ubuntu Desktop edition, for instance, comes with the latest GNOME 44 desktop environment, which brings a more simplified user interface. Additionally, it implements the latest Linux 6.2 kernel series to provide exceptional hardware support.

Ubuntu 23.04 adds fresh and new wallpapers featuring the winning theme “Lunar Lobster” as the default wallpaper for this release.

Furthermore, a Ubuntu 23.04 beta consists of an up-to-date toolchain, including the most recent versions of the GCC 13 system compiler, systemd 252.5 init system, BlueZ 5.66 2 Bluetooth stack, NetworkManager 1.42 network connection manager, PipeWire 0.3.65 multimedia framework, and Mesa 23 graphics stack.

The remaining official Ubuntu flavors also introduce updated graphical environments. For example, Kubuntu and Ubuntu Studio feature KDE Plasma 5.27 LTS, Xubuntu boasts Xfce 4.18, Lubuntu features LXQt 1.2, Ubuntu Bridge implements Budgie 10.7, Ubuntu Unity integrates Unity 7.7, Ubuntu Cinnamon has Cinnamon 5.6, and Ubuntu Mate includes Mate 1.28.

The beta version is currently available for testing this upcoming non-LTS version of the Linux systems. However, the final release of Ubuntu 23.04 is expected on April 20th, 2023. Until then, you can take the beta version for a test drive on your PC right now by downloading the live ISO images from the official website.

You can also find beta versions of other official flavors, including Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu Bridge, Ubuntu Unity, Ubuntu Mate, Ubuntu Cinnamon, Edubuntu, and Ubuntu Kylin.
