Ubuntu Store: New Flutter-Based Software Store
Ubuntu is planning to have a new store that aims to be an improvement over both the existing Flutter store and the classic software center. As Tim Holmes-Mitra of Canonical shared the updates on the new Flutter-based app store, we can now have a quick look at the new store.
The “App Store” was the originally intended name, but Apple has already trademarked it. So, the “Ubuntu Store” appears to be the current choice, though we will have to wait as the name for the new Flutter-based software center is still being decided.
The code is on the dev branch at ubuntu/app-store 24. If everything goes according to plan, the new Flutter-based software center could be included even before the official release of Ubuntu 23.10. That means daily versions of Mantic Minotaur will include this new store as default this week or two.
In this new Flutter-based software center, the homepage includes three sections: one header with the search menu, one sidebar with the app categories and settings, and one center section with all applications. With the improved search functionality, the search results are now displayed as users start to type in the search bar.
The app view has also received enhancements, featuring a unique source switcher for Snap and Debian packages. For a preview of this Flutter-based store, watch this video.
